When we were asked to quote for the return of ITV’s Love Island in 2017, the opportunity seemed too good to miss. A bespoke Broadcast package including both power and temperature control, spread across two sites, on an island 1300 miles from home. The very type of job that is Powerline’s raison d’etre!

Being a show that broadcasts live, we had to ensure we had multiple levels of redundancy in place to cover any eventuality. This involved utilising synchronised gensets for the whole load, and additionally eight 3-phase UPS systems for the technical equipment.
The generators would have to be shipped from the UK, as sourcing them locally was just not an option. Although this involved additional transport costs, it did mean that we would be using our own generators giving us a number of advantages over cross-hired sets.
Familiarity with the equipment and confidence in it’s reliability for one, but another big advantage of using our own sets was telemetry – the ability to remotely monitor and if necessary control them. Although we were providing 24/7 cover on site, it gave an additional level of reassurance to know that should something unplanned happen, we would be aware of it without having to be told by the client “there is a power problem”.

This was born out one morning when an email alert came through from one of the generators informing us that the DC voltage had dropped below a pre-set value. We called the engineer on site and he found the alternator drive belt had just snapped. Within 5 minutes of the issue happening, we were already working to resolve it.
Fuel management also becomes much easier when you can see tank levels and actual consumption in real-time.
All of the data from the telemetry is logged, so can be reviewed at any time, an invaluable tool to refer to when the job comes around again next year!
